Flow
Ruchi Vael'kyn
The dark elf priestess observed the motionless body of the very familiar Faern. Ruchi felt a knot in her tight throat, but reacted with conditioned harshness instead of solicitousness. The shadow-snake was hovering right next to her, like a scarf in the wind. "What the hell, Zynrae!" With her slim, onyx fingers, Ruchi pried one of Zynrae's eyes open. It was pitch-black, covered in a greyish film. "I guess that's what it means to be possessed by a demon." Ruchi thought of the Little Light and what she would think. To be frank, she had no idea, but she closed her eyes and placed her palm against one of Zynrae's legs. Ruchi let go of her thoughts and emptied herself, trying to reach her presence, but the priestess felt icky, irritated, and pressed for time. Fuck! Just then, Zynrae started muttering. "The stone, Ruchi, the one in my pocket." Quickly, the priestess grabbed the stone and pressed it into Zynrae's palm. Ruchi recognized the stone from an expedition the magician had led. "Maybe the stone found you, not the other way around, Zynrae." A strange light was released, and the eyes of the Faern cleared, their familiar violet slowly glowing in the dark. Back at home, Ruchi hovered over her tea kettle, taking in the warm mist. She was concerned about the studies her housemate was conducting. What if she lures them into our house? Is this a trap? Then she relaxed, trusting the Faern's judgment, at least partially. In drow society, traps were spun daily: socially, politically, and physically. Ruchi pondered: how could the Faern be less susceptible to the shadows, yet study them? What were they feeding on? Having not studied them herself, Ruchi had no idea. Was there a way to study them safely, perhaps in the Sorcere? Or somewhere in secret. It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Resistance? Were they feeding on resistance? Feeling threatened by it? Ruchi thought of her clerical magic not flowing unless she surrendered her thoughts and emptied herself. Maybe they fed on her ego, or felt threatened by it. Clearly, the Faern had to continue her studies to find out. And for pity's sake, safely! "Flow," Ruchi muttered later that day when she passed Zynrae.
