The Wide and Deep

Nathan Calresh

Nathan watched the red-haired vampire slowly disappear as she walked into the dark forest. Only the nocturnal mist caressed her wood elf silhouette, her red hair reflecting in the moonlight until she was gone.

Suddenly, Nathan became tense, and he felt a sudden urge to run after her. Then, the vampire released his fear.

No need to push the river. She was in the river.

The vampire exhaled, though he did not need to; he liked the theatrics of breathing. His undead heart did not beat, nor did it need any air.

The same was true for hers.

And that was her great advantage. She was a vampire, with all the pitfalls and troubled cravings.

The night harbored her, and the Balor did not know her kind. He had packed the unholy cloak into her bag before she left, while she was resting. She would find it, and perhaps remember Nathan had given it to her many nights before she ever became a vampire.

Prophecies do come true sometimes.

A vision appeared before his eyes. Her red hair weaving through the nightly wind. The landscape was a wide and deep panorama. The wide and deep plane of life.

Oh, do not fear the wide and deep, little falcon. It is the night's gift. Our free will, and our freedom.

Then the vampire started stringing his bow. He would come if she needed him, but until then, he knew, she was anchored within herself. Nathan trusted Yllaria to find the Balor plaguing the lands.
